How to Choose the Perfect Diamond Ring: A Buyer's Guide

If you are a Harry Potter fan, you’d know that “the wand chooses the wizard”. Pet owners will also know how your pet chooses its favorite family member. The same goes for diamond rings. You can’t expect a dazzling diamond ring to look good on you just because there’s a diamond in it.

Let the diamond ring speak to you and you’ll know when you have found the perfect fit for your personality. How do you know when you’ve found the right diamond ring for you?

This buyer’s guide provides insights on how to choose a diamond ring by understanding the language of diamond jewelry.

Choosing Your Diamond Ring Setting

There’s no rush to find your diamond ring. Diamonds are the grandest statement you could ever make with your jewelry. When you are choosing the queen among the bees for your fine jewelry, take your time to look at every single aspect.

Before purchasing a diamond ring, the first thing to consider is its ring setting. The setting defines the look of your ring. The diamond may be the star, but can the star shine without the perfect night sky?

There are four main diamond ring settings:

Solitaire: This setting is one of classic designs with a single diamond being highlighted as the centerpiece. For someone looking for gracious elegance, this is the perfect setting.

Halo: At the center is a stunning diamond to grab all the attention you want. Then there’s a halo of smaller diamonds intricately surrounding the stunner, giving it a vintage look. Classic and glamorous, the halo is a popular ring setting nowadays.

Three Stone: For those of you looking to add more sentimental value to your diamond ring, this is the ideal ring setting. The three stones represent a couple’s past, present, and future together. Having your love story studded into your engagement ring will enrich your love for one another as a diamond ring is forever.

Cluster:  A collection of carefully chosen mini-diamonds are set symmetrically to give a glittery effect. This style of ring setting was very popular in the Georgian and Victorian eras. If you are on a tight budget and want a diamond ring that makes a bold statement, a cluster setting with smaller stones that give the illusion of a larger diamond is a great option.

Types of Precious Metal for Your Diamond Ring

When you are buying a diamond ring, you also have to choose the precious metal the diamond is set in.

Before you consider what the most valuable and durable precious metal is, consider your skin type. If you have sensitive skin or are allergic to certain precious metals, the choice has already been made for you. But fear not, hypoallergenic metals such as platinum, gold, palladium, silver, and rhodium are elegant choices for diamond jewelry.

Next up is your personal preference in the choice of metal color. A wide variety of metal colors are available in both warm tones and cool tones. For warm skin tones, yellow gold is a great choice. White gold, platinum, and silver work best with cooler skin tones.

Afterward, consider which precious metal compliments the diamond ring setting. The depth of the diamond cut, color, ring setting, and carat weight impact the overall look of the diamonds on your ring. For example, colored diamonds look better on a white gold or platinum band.

Once you’ve decided on the metal color that is most suitable for your skin type, and the diamond setting, you can move onto factors like durability and value.

The Right Diamond Shape for Your Diamond Ring

There is no hard and fast rule on picking a diamond shape for your hand. Always pick what you love the most.

However, if you want to impress your partner with a diamond that flatters your ring finger the most, here are a few tips to keep in mind:

  1. Smaller diamonds compliment dainty hands well. Opt for diamonds with a symmetrical cut. Round shapes like princess and cushion cuts are good options.
  2. Bold diamond shapes are brilliant for large hands as larger facets balance well on them. Don’t be scared to use a large diamond or a double halo to impress the crowd.
  3. For long fingers, elongated shapes such as pear, oval, and emerald are great choices.
  4. If you have short fingers, symmetrical shapes will compliment your hand shape just as with small hands.
  5. To make thick fingers look slender, go for diamond shapes like oval or marquise since they can fill out the width and yet have a lengthening effect.
  6. Solitaire diamonds set on slim bands are great for thin fingers. You can also use diamond shapes like elongated-oval and elongated-marquise.

If you ever felt insecure about your hand shape when going diamond ring shopping, you are not alone. Thin or thick fingers, small or large hands, there’s a diamond shape that can make your hand sparkle with love.
